How it unfolds

Your Bathroom Remodeling project, step by step.

Bathroom remodels are trade-intensive in a compressed footprint — every phase depends on the one before, and waterproofing in particular must be inspected and approved before tile can be set. The sequence below is non-negotiable; rushing any step is the leading cause of leaks and callback work years later. Actual timelines vary by size, fixtures, and permit jurisdiction.

Selections locked, permits pulled & materials ordered

2–4 weeks

Tile, fixtures, vanity, shower glass, and all finish hardware are selected and specified before demolition begins. Permit applications are submitted simultaneously, and long-lead items — custom vanities, specialty tile, frameless glass — are ordered to avoid schedule gaps mid-project.

Site protection & demolition

1–2 days

Adjacent spaces are sealed with poly barriers. Existing tile, backer board, fixtures, vanity, flooring, and drywall are removed down to studs and subfloor, revealing the condition of blocking, subfloor, and existing plumbing rough-in for assessment.

Framing & blocking

1–3 days

New blocking is installed in stud bays to support niche shelves, bench framing, grab bars, and heavy wall-hung fixtures at exactly the specified heights. Any reconfiguration of walls — expanding a shower, relocating a doorway — is completed at this stage.

Rough plumbing & electrical

2–4 days

Drain and supply lines are repositioned for the new shower valve, tub filler, or relocated fixtures. New dedicated circuits are roughed for the exhaust fan, heated floor thermostat, and any vanity lighting. All in-wall work must be complete before the next inspection.

Rough inspection

1–2 days

The city inspector reviews framing, rough plumbing, and electrical before any backer board or membrane goes up. No waterproofing or tile work proceeds until a passing rough inspection is on record; we schedule and manage this coordination.

Waterproofing — shower pan & membrane

2–4 days including inspection

The shower floor is sloped to drain with a mortar bed, and a continuous waterproof membrane — typically Schluter Kerdi, Laticrete Hydro Ban, or a hot-mopped liner for tile-over applications — is applied up walls to the code-required height. A waterproofing inspection is required before tile is set in most jurisdictions.

Tile setting & grout

3–10 days depending on scope and tile size

Floor tile is set in a mud bed or on uncoupling membrane; wall tile and shower surround tile are set over approved backer board or membrane. Large-format, book-matched, or pattern tile requires careful layout and planning. Grout is applied after tile is fully cured, and grout joints are sealed.

Drywall, paint, vanity & countertop

3–5 days

Moisture-resistant drywall is hung in non-wet areas, taped, finished, and painted. The vanity is set, leveled, and scribed; the countertop and undermount sink are installed and sealed. Medicine cabinets and mirrors are mounted at this stage.

Plumbing & electrical finish

1–3 days

Faucets, showerheads, thermostatic valve trims, toilet, and tub filler are installed and pressure-tested. Exhaust fan, vanity lighting, GFCI outlets, switches, and heated floor thermostat are wired and trimmed out. All fixtures are function-tested before final inspection.

Shower glass measure & install

1 week fabrication; 1 day install

Frameless glass panels and doors are measured from the finished tile opening — not from plans — and sent to the fabricator for custom cutting and hardware drilling. Finished glass is installed and adjusted for a gap-free, plumb hang with smooth swing or slide action.

Accessories, final clean, punch, inspection & walkthrough

2–3 days

Towel bars, toilet paper holders, robe hooks, and any grab bars are anchored into pre-installed blocking. The space is detailed-cleaned, a punch list is worked through, the city issues final sign-off, and we walk the finished bathroom with you.
