A steam room, built into your bath.
Silicon Valley Kitchen & Bath Co. designs and builds steam showers from our office in Campbell, serving the South Bay and the wider Bay Area. A steam shower is a sealed, vapor-proof room, so we handle the whole assembly under one contract: generator sizing, the dedicated electrical circuit, steam-rated waterproofing on the walls and ceiling, the sloped ceiling, tile, and gasketed glass, with a documented flood test before any tile is set.

Why a steam shower is not a regular shower
A standard shower only has to manage liquid water for a few minutes. A steam shower fills the enclosure with hot vapor that pushes into every joint, including the ceiling. That takes a continuous vapor barrier rated for steam rooms across the walls, ceiling, bench and niches, a ceiling sloped so condensation runs to a wall instead of dripping on you, and a door that seals from floor to ceiling. Skip any one of those and moisture ends up in the framing.
Getting the generator right
The generator is sized to the volume of the enclosure, then adjusted for what the walls are made of: porcelain and stone absorb more heat than acrylic, and an exterior wall or a tall ceiling adds load. An undersized unit never gets the room hot; an oversized one short-cycles. We work the sizing out on paper before anything is ordered, and place the unit somewhere it can be reached for service, such as a vanity cabinet or an adjacent closet.
Adding steam to an existing bathroom
If we are already building your shower as part of a remodel, adding steam is a modest upgrade to work that is happening anyway. Converting a finished shower is different: the tile has to come out so the vapor barrier, ceiling slope and wiring can go in, so it is effectively a shower rebuild. We will tell you plainly which case you are in after a site visit.
Questions we get
- Do you install steam showers in Campbell and the South Bay?
- Yes. Our office is at 2272 Camden Avenue in Campbell, and we build steam showers in Campbell, Los Gatos, Saratoga, San Jose, Cupertino and across the Bay Area as part of our design-build bathroom remodeling. We hold California CSLB License #975092 and have been licensed since 2012.
- Can you convert my existing shower into a steam shower?
- Usually, but it means rebuilding the shower. A steam shower needs a vapor barrier behind the tile on the walls and ceiling, a sloped ceiling, a sealed door and a dedicated electrical circuit, and none of those can be added on top of finished tile.
- Does a steam shower need a permit?
- Normally yes. A steam shower adds new electrical and plumbing work, which requires a building permit in Bay Area cities. When a permit is part of your project, we prepare the application and manage the inspections with your city building department.
- How much room does a steam shower need?
- Less than most people expect. A typical primary-bath shower footprint works well, and smaller enclosures heat faster. You also need a spot for the generator close to the shower, usually a vanity cabinet, closet or attic space with service access.
- What surfaces work best in a steam shower?
- Dense, low-absorption materials: porcelain tile and sintered stone such as Dekton or Neolith hold up to daily steam with almost no maintenance. Natural stone can be used, but it needs regular sealing and a larger generator.
