Steam showers in Campbell homes

Campbell is our home city, and most of the steam showers we design here go into 1950s and 1960s ranch houses and the bungalows near downtown. Primary bathrooms in these homes are compact, which works in favor of steam: a smaller enclosure heats quickly and needs a modest generator. The usual work is reorganizing the existing footprint so the shower can be fully enclosed, then finding a dry, reachable spot for the generator, most often a vanity cabinet or an adjacent closet.

Permits and systems

Many Campbell ranches still carry their original 100-amp electrical panel. A steam generator needs its own 240-volt circuit, so we check panel capacity on the first visit; where the panel is full, a subpanel or an upgrade becomes part of the scope. Raised floors over a crawlspace are common here, which makes drain and supply changes straightforward.

Permits for this work go through the City of Campbell Building Division. When a permit is part of your project, we handle the application and the inspections.

What is different about Campbell homes?
Many Campbell ranches still carry their original 100-amp electrical panel. A steam generator needs its own 240-volt circuit, so we check panel capacity on the first visit; where the panel is full, a subpanel or an upgrade becomes part of the scope. Raised floors over a crawlspace are common here, which makes drain and supply changes straightforward.
Can you convert my existing shower into a steam shower?
Usually, but it means rebuilding the shower. A steam shower needs a vapor barrier behind the tile on the walls and ceiling, a sloped ceiling, a sealed door and a dedicated electrical circuit, and none of those can be added on top of finished tile.
Does a steam shower need a permit?
Normally yes. A steam shower adds new electrical and plumbing work, which requires a building permit in Bay Area cities. When a permit is part of your project, we prepare the application and manage the inspections with your city building department.
